CAIRO – 17 February 2020: Cairo Days for Arab Drama kicked off on February 16 at the Institute of the Arab World in Paris and will run until February 19.
The prominent cinematic event which is organized by Culture Without Borders Association was attended by 50 renowned Arab drama stars, including Yousra, Laila Elwi, Elham Shaheen, Dora, Kinda Alloush, Rania Farid Shawqi, Rajaa al-Jeddawi, Hanadi Muhanna, Asser Yassin, Mustafa Shaaban, Amr Youssef, Ali al-Hajjar, Amr Mostafa, Ahmed al-Saadani, Hani Muhanna, Jamal al-Adl, Medhat al-Adl, Tamer Habib, Sherif Mandour, Khaled Selim, Eyad Nassar, editor in chief of Youm 7 Khaled Salah, Tarek Shenawi, and Jasmine Taha Zaki.Abla al-Aswad and famed Egyptian composer Hany Muhanna are the founders of the festival.
Cairo Days for Arab Drama is tailor made to highlight the significant role of Arab drama as a soft power to promote knowledge exchange and cultural rapprochement between drama makers, open new horizons and encourage joint Arab productions.
This year’s edition bears the name of the late artist Farid Shawky to celebrate the centenary of his birthday with the participation of his daughter, Egyptian actress Rania Farid Shawqi.
Veteran Egyptian star Yousra will be honored in this edition in appreciation for her contribution to the world of drama. This edition will also honor the participating Arab countries, namely Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Lebanon.
Presented by famed Egyptian TV host Sherihan Abul Hassan, the opening ceremony witnessed the screening of a documentary film that tackles the values of Egyptian and Arab drama and its impact on the life of the Arab citizen.
Furthermore, a number of seminars will be held on February 17, with the participation of critics, journalists and artists from Europe and the Arab world, to promote culture and tourism for the participating Arab countries.
The seminars will tackle the chances of joint Arab production and dubbing in foreign languages to introduce the Arab culture to the world and open the way for large Arab and foreign partnerships.
This event constitutes an important turning point for Egyptian and Arab drama, as it introduces the western world to the Arab production, according to Aswad.
Aswad said that the first edition will be held without competition, provided that the next sessions, which will be launched in June at Cairo Opera House, will include competitions.
Culture without Borders Association aims to develop culture, especially the drama industry, in the Arab countries, through organizing production, photography, filming and writing workshops for young university students, aiming to produce joint Arab series.
