Egypt’s trade exchange with Nile Basin countries up by 25.4%, CAPMAS

Egypt’s Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) revealed that the trade exchange between Egypt and Nile Basin countries rose in 2018 to US$1.87 billion compared to $1.49 billion in 2017, an increase of 25.4 percent.

In a statement on Sunday regarding the trade exchange with Nile Basin countries during 2018, CAPMAS said that the value of total exports to the Nile Basin countries reached $1.2 billion in 2018 compared to $1.1 billion in 2017, an increase of 8.2 percent.

CAPMAS added that Sudan came in first place with imports amounting to $399.3 million, representing 33.2 percent of the total Egyptian exports to the bloc, followed by Kenya with imports of $354.6 million at 29.4 percent, then Ethiopia with imports of $169.0 million representing 14.0 percent.

Exports to Eritrea amounted to $16.2 million, representing 9.6 percent of the total exports to the bloc, and exports to Uganda were $82.9 million, or 6.9 percent of the total.

The statement pointed out that the value of imports from Nile Basin countries amounted to $668 million in 2018 compared to $380 million dollars in 2017, an increase of 75.8 percent.

Regarding Egypt’s imports from Nile Basin countries, the report said that Kenya came in first place with exports to Egypt amounting to $287.3 million or 43.0 percent of Egypt’s imports from the basin countries, followed by Sudan with exports to Egypt amounting to $207.5 million or 31.0 percent of the total bloc.

Congo came third with exports to Egypt amounting to $148.0 million at 22.1 percent, Ethiopia at fourth with exports to Egypt amounting to $ 10.3 million at 1.5 percent and then Uganda at fifth place with exports to Egypt amounting to $7.8 million, 1.2 percent of the total bloc.
